Week 5 Composing compositions

This week's lecture had been really interesting! We learned a few tips on photography and the key principles of composing compositions.

For this week's in-lecture exercise, I decided to borrow my Lego toy — Princess Belle to be my model for the day.  Here are some of the photos taken with the intention to tell different sides of the story of her.

1st Photo: I took a photo of Princess Belle at eye-level which is a fairly neutral shot. By placing her in the center with no other distracting materials in the foreground or background, she is the focal point of the picture. I also attempted to use the Rule of Thirds to ensure that this shot offers a pleasing and balanced arrangement in the vertical orientation. The intention is just to get audiences to focus on Belle.

2nd photo: Then, I decided to take the photo from a lower angle to make Princess Belle seems all almighty and powerful. Unfortunately, there are no leading lines in the background to direct the viewers' attention to it. If that's possible, then it can better accentuate the "superman effect".

3rd photo: I also attempted to use the canted angle to evoke sadness and to picture the psychological meltdown of the character. As seen in the photo, Princess Belle is lying on its side while other ornaments are standing tall and confidently. I wanted to use this angle to show that Princess may be emotionally drained from her everyday life of being an ornament or perhaps she has been neglected by her owner which made her upset.  I also added a cinematic filter effect to make the atmosphere seems more dull than usual to amplify the negative emotions that audiences might feel as they see this photo.

4th photo:
It's a happy Princess Belle! This is a portrait of Princess Belle and the intention is to capture an extreme close up of the character. I am not sure why but as compared to the first photo, this portrait appears to be aesthetically pleasing to the eyes, probably because of the colorful, blurred background. Perhaps the use of vibrant colors in the background makes Princess Belle look livelier.
